Article Planning

The puropse of my article in my double page spread is to entertain and inform readers about the artist and promotion of their music. It will be a question and answer style interview with a visable interviewer. The language used will be informal and relaxed with the use of colloquial language. The semantic field of the article will be music and 'celeb gossip.'

Sketches of initial ideas

Proposal of ideas

I propose to make a Front cover, a contents page and a double page spread for a new music magazine. My intended audience is 16-24 year olds who are interested in indie music. The itention of my magazine is to inform and entertain the readers with the music and celebrity context. I will use an equal balance of both pictures and text on my front cover that will both be clear and stand out. My contents page will include a smaller scale picture of the front cover with a box alongside showing the main features of the magazine. I will put a column withh the less important features underneath this and i will also include a brief editors note. For my double page spread i have drawn information from my research and will have one page image and the other page showing the article.
Taking into account my audience research i will try to meet their needs in my magazine and produce it to the highest standards.

Institutional Context

Audience Research

I am going to make a questionnaire to make sure my magazine will meet the needs of my readers. To carry out my research i will give about 20 people of mixed gender the same questionnaire and compare results.
Here is a copy of my questionnaire that i will distribute.

Write up:
I handed my questionairre out to 7 boys and 9 girls all of who were in the in the age band of 16 - 21.
The most popular genre of music was indie closley followed by rock and R 'n' B. Each person had a different favourite artist, an example of some that were wrote down were, Neyo, Mumford ans sons, and Beyonce. Everybody i asked downloaded their music illegally via the internet on sites such as Limewire. It varied as to how often people purched music magazines from once a week to never. The majority of people would like to pay £1 - £2 for a music magazine, and upto £4 if it was good quality. Everybody put down their 3 favourite colours and the most popular one that came out was white/cream and blue. 6 out of the 9 girls picked Q magazine with cheryl cole on the front cover as their favourite, they prefered this one because "Looks most interesting, i like how they've changed cheryl coles image, i want to read more!" The second most popular was the NME magazine front cover, this was described as "It looks as though it has alot to offer and i like the style of music written about" Finally when asked about image versus text, a balance of both came out on top 11 out of 15 people picked this option, the rest picked more image.

I will use this imformation to make the best out of my magazine, and take into account the results of my questionnaire when doing this.

Defining my target audience

I researched the reader profile of NME magazine to give me an idea of who may want to buy my magazine. I got my information from the image on the left.

The reader profile shows that more males read NME magazine at 69% compared with just 31% females.

The average age of the readers is 24 years old, 52% of the readers are currently working full time, while 7% are working part time and 29% are still studying.

The majority of the readers (65%) are ABC1 (middle class).

The reader profile also shows what the audience interests are, what they spend the most money on and what is most important to them.

My target audince will be similar to that of NME magazine, i think the gender of the readers of my magazine will be split pretty evenly as it is an indie magazine, and it will appeal to the intrests of both male and female readers. The target age for my audience will be between 16 and 24, but this may differ from reader to reader. The socio economic class will be ABC1 with C2 and maybe D, depending on the language i choose to use in my magazine.

Contents Page

Contents Page

Contents Page

This contents page is from NME maazine. The purposeof a contents page is to inform the reader about the various articles and advertisments within the magazine, the heading "NME this week" shows this.

The focus of this magazine is the large central image, it shows its importance within the magazine and shows that it is the main feature. Below it there is a caption telling the readers where abouts in the magazine this article is and what it is about. The colour scheme is continued from the front cover and the rest of the text is on a plain white background.

To the right of the image is a column divided into different sections, showing where abouts you will find what inside the magazine. It also makes it easy for the reader to look up a spesific article. The page numbers are featured next to the different articles again making it easy for the reader.
To the left of the central image is a band index showing featured bands in the magazine that week, it helps the reader find a certain band they are intrested in without reading unneccessary text.

In my contents page i will use a main image of the front cover of my magazine with a features box showing the main articles shown on the front cover, i will also continue my colour scheme from my front cover like this magazine has done. On my front cover, i will also add in an editors note.

Double Page Spread

Double Page Spread

Double Page Spread

This is a double page spread taken from Q magazine. The main focus of it is the large close up image of pink on the right hand side. The image is very natural, with a neutral colour palette. The background is out of focus and the image is very soft on the eye with golden tones in pink's hair along with her slightly bronzed face and the shot of her laughing make the image warm and welcoming, it also suggests her personality to be warm, and doesn't take herself too seriously. A quote has also been pulled from the text and placed at the bottom right of the image, i cannot actually read the quote, but alongside the image it suggests that it is something she said, that she found funny.

Second to that is the text on the left "cash for questions" this shows the audience exactly what the article is going to be about. The text is in 3 coloumns and set out in a question and answer format. It is black text on a contrasting white background, making it easy to read and is a dramatic contrast also to the colourful image on the right.

When planning my double page sread i will also use one page for images and one for text. Also like this article i will use coloumns to set my text out and i will use a question and answer format.

Textual Analysis

Textual Analysis

Textual Analysis

The target audience for this magazine is late teens and young adults who like a rock, indie style of music.
The colour theme indicates this as it sticks to a palette of 3 main colours, black, white and grey - colours commonly associated with this style of music.
However the use of cheryl cole on the front cover goes against the genre of the magazine, as cheryl is usually portrayed as a girly, feminine, pop icon. For this magazine shoot she had been 'made up' to match in with the magazines genre, with a pale face and dark eyes and hair. Cheryl is also seen to be wearing red lipstick, this connotes a sexy side to herself and the rock genre of music, this idea is further highlighted by the close up shot of her striking a very provocotave pose and also the subtle use of some red text.

In regards to the layout of the magazine, there is a clear easy to read masthead in the top right hand corner which is one of the magazines main selling points. The font is simple and the same over the whole front cover, some of the content is amplified by the use of highlighting making it easy to read against the background. A simple colour scheme of black, white and grey with a touch of red has been stuck to throughout.

The language that has been used has been used very carefully and cleaverly. The masthead is one single letter - Q - this could take on many different meanings and connotations. The main sell lines "3 words cheryl cole rocks" is extremley cleaver as it combines her new single '3 words' and it also appeals to the target audience by implying she 'rocks' it could take on two different meanings, that she is interested in rock music and listens to it herself and she physically rocks, or it could be used as another way of saying she is great, either way it makes the audience want to pick up the magazine and read it.

In conclusion it is clear that the front cover acts as an advertisement for the magazine. When planning my own i will try to incorporate bold masthead, easy to read text and a complimenting image to go alongside.
